Over the weekend, WSJ ran an article about the pants that became the most covetable article of clothing since the Amazon jacket, brand High Sport’s “Kick.”
High Sport has been on my radar for a minute. But $890 for a pair of elevated stretch pants is a tough sell. Even if your pay/pain threshold is that high for an elegant coat or a gorgeous loafer, I would dare to say that most of us would really question spending that kind of cash on something a fashion novice would think is another pair of Lululemon leggings.
And yet, and yet…procuring a pair is more difficult than getting your actual name on your coffee order. (I’ve come to accept that my Starbucks name will forever be Sandra.)
Naturally, I was intrigued.
Why this pant works, and works SO well, apart from the fashion pedigree it carries and our post pandemic desire to combine comfort and style, is the proportions.
Amy Smilovic of Tibi really nails it when she talks about Big, Skin, Slim. Coveteur does a better job than I can of analyzing the formula, but to give you the cliff notes version- a “look” works every time when it carries the proportions of big, slim, and a little skin.
The Kick pant is a 3 in 1.
And that is the pièce de résistance. It does it all.

Of course, this wouldn’t be Almonds and I wouldn’t be me, if I didn’t Nancy Drew some Same/Same alternatives for us.
Grey Ven- Mark it now when I tell you the brand, Grey Ven, will be all over your feed and well entrenched in your life this time next year. An emerging brand that was just recently picked up by Neiman Marcus, it is a formidable competitor for The Row and High Sport. This may be my most exciting Same/Same ever. Get it before everyone else beats you to it.
Spanx-Don’t make the mistake I did and pigeonhole Spanx as an underpinnings only brand. The wide leg Perfect pant is one of my favorites and the kick flare is certainly a very reasonably priced crop.
A.L.C.- This pair from A.L.C is too good to miss at this sale price if you’re looking for the profile in black.
ALC High waist flare $158
Wolford- I’ve had considerable luck with Wolford bodysuits. They are pricey, but well worth it if you’ve ever had the unfortunate experience of trying in vain to negotiate the snaps of a less expensive bodysuit. Wolford’s quality is evident and if you’re looking for a sleek pair that highlights that hard work you’ve been putting in at the gym, this could be the one.
Wolford Grazia pant $320
Frame- If you want more work/less play in your pants, try this one from Frame. It’s got a zipper and clasp, which naturally pulls it out of the athleisure trajectory, but the silhouette is the same.
Vince- The OG of minimalism, Vince comes through with a pair that blends in vs stands out if that’s more your vibe.
Vince crop flare $295
Happy Shopping!
